Game Description: Dying of the Light

A world without light needs a savior. Earth has decided to throw its hail mary with two scientists with a hare-brained scheme.

Dying of the Light is an adventure game that brings together two old friends: space exploration and existential crisis. Earth has been cast into darkness as the sun has finally begun to burn out. The world has had to become hardened through decades of solar flares and this recent decline into another ice age and an eternal night. Enter Stevie, a bright, but self-sabotaging woman in the last ditch Sunspot Institute. The Institute has been established since foremost minds discovered that the sun would burn out decades before the game takes place. As fallout of this, many families have been displaced and many have completely isolated themselves in bunkers. Several solutions have been pitched but none were backed and now humanity is facing the music of a finite universe. You play as Stevie and get to know this dystopian earth through her eyes. Stevie has an idea that she has pushed back again and again but now with eminent apocalypse ahead of her she finally pitches the concept to the head of the institute. If the sun is burning through its fuel, why don’t we send some fuel to kickstart it? The head of the institute laughs at first but after a bit says that all they’ve got left is a long shot.

The game will take place in four acts: The Institute, The Green Light, Takeoff, and Rage. Over the course of these acts, you will get the chance to explore this dystopian world. In The Institute, you will have the chance to explore Des Moines, Iowa, how exciting. Many people will have abandoned the city but you can still find a few of your neighbors and get a good look at the world. Then in The Green Light, Stevie will help with the assembling of the rocket that will carry out her idea. Assembling the rocket will allow you to put the pieces together. Throughout The Green Light, you will be able to investigate the institute grounds and get to know people in between helping construct the rocket.

Most importantly, you meet the astronaut who will be piloting the rocket, Riley. You can also join him in astronaut training to get to know him more. The connection here is the main point of the game. In a dying world, the only thing we have control over are the people we hold onto. It is at the end of this chapter that Stevie can choose to join Riley on the mission. Both paths will lead you to different endings. In one, you leave with Riley and do various upkeeping tasks on the rocket over the next few months. This path will allow for some more in depth conversation with Riley and some exploration of the rocket. The second path will have Stevie stay at the Institute and watch the mission from afar. This path allows for more exploration of Des Moines and sees Stevie become famous and go on TV. You will see more of the world this way. Then the final chapter, Rage, will either focus on your imminent immolation inside of the sun or the fallout of your decision to follow through with staying on earth.

The focus of this game is the power of connection in our most trying times. In the face of a world that is falling apart we choose whether we come together to consider our options or choose to rage against the dying of the light by ourselves.
